News & Articles Greek Historic Rally Championship: The season so far!

Historic Rally Acropolis is the sixth of the seven rallies that are totally included in the Greek Historic Rally Championship that was held for the first time in 2002. The rally counts with coefficient 3 in the championship and this gives an additional motivation to the Greek crews to try as hard as they can to succeed in the rally, that made a comeback in the FIA European Historic Rally Championship.

The first rally of the year took place last March. Rally Viotias was won by Alexandros Halivelakis-Thanos Papageorgiou (Ford Escort MKII), followed by Themis Chalkias-Nikos Komnos (Nissan Pulsar), with Dimitris Amaxopoulos-Hara Moraiti (Toyota Corolla KE30) completing the top three. The second round took place in tarmac surface, with Rally Sprint Egion in April. Marios Stafylopatis-Giorgos Hatzirigas drove the BMW M3 E30 to the limit to take his first victory of the season, with Ioannis Katsikas-Nikos Babalis finishing second in a Ford Escort MKII and Dimitris Amaxopoulos-Hara Moraiti (Toyota Corolla KE30) completing the rally in third place.

Rally Stereas Ellados was the third round of the championship, with Alexandros Halivelakis-Thanos Papageorgiou (Ford Escort MKII) returning to the first step of the podium, winning by just 3 seconds over the second-placed Alexandros Christodoulou-Thanasis Samaras in a Lancia 037 Beta Rally. Konstantinos Papadimitriou-Manos Sigalas (Toyota Starlet EP71 Turbo finished third. In the tarmac Rally Fthiotidos, Marios Stafylopatis-Giorgos Chatzirigas (Ford Sierra RS Cosworth 4×4) doubled their victories in this year’s championship. Lymberis Papazoglou-Maria Nikolopoulou finished second in a Lancia Delta, leaving “Geo”-Dimitris Tripintis (Peugeot 205 Rallye) in third place. Invulnerable on asphalt terrain this year, Marios Stafylopatis-Giorgos Chatzirigas won also the fifth round of the year, this time driving a Lancia Delta Integrale 16V. In Achaios Rally Sprint, they were followed by Ioannis Katsikas-Nikos Babalis (Ford Escort MKII), while the 2014 Serbian Champion, Italian Gianluca Rocco completed the podium, with Serbian Jovan Isailovic as co-driver in the Ford Sierra RS Cosworth 4×4.

In the championship standings, Dimitris Amaxopoulos-Hara Moraiti are at the top having142 points, with Marios Stafylopatis-Giorgos Chatzirigas following them with 122 points. Alexandros Halivelakis-Thanos Papageorgiou are in the third place, with 86 points, after the first 5 rallies of the season.

Historic Acropolis Rally counts as the 6th round of the season for the Greek Historic Rally Championship with coefficient 3.

Sponsors of the event are the Municipality of Elefsina, Elefsina, the European Capital of Culture for 2023, Superfast Ferries, SP Tableware, Seajets and Cosmote TV.
